Events > The Annual Great Tomato Tasting
Rutgers University, the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension proudly announce the Annual Snyder Farm Open House and Great Tomato Tasting, to be held on Wednesday,
August 29, 2012 from 3 pm - dusk.
With the invaluable assistance of the Rutgers NJAES Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers, this year's event includes:
- the very popular tasting of over 60 heirloom and hybrid tomato varieties.
- chef demonstrations featuring preparation of several tomato recipes.
- guided educational wagon tours of the farm’s research plots.
- tastings of honey, basil, apples and peaches.
- professional advice offered by the Hunterdon County Board of Health Staff on stink bugs, mosquitoes and black flies - pesky insects near and dear to local residents.
- “square foot” gardening demonstrations for those interested in small, productive gardens.
The Melda C. Snyder Teaching Garden will showcase demonstration gardens of deer tolerant ornamentals, native pollinator plants that attract pollinator insects to your garden, Blueberry and Hollies from the Rutgers holly and blueberry breeding programs and apple and peaches from NJAES Tree Fruit Breeding Program.
Also featured is our wall of fruit with apple trees and upright growing peach varieties for the home landscape.
Rutgers NJAES faculty, staff and Master Gardener volunteers will be available throughout the event to answer your gardening questions and to make your visit to our research farm a pleasurable and memorable one. Bring your camera!
