About our Center
The Snyder Research and Extension Farm is home to the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station's Center for Wildlife Damage Control. The Center actively works with the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife providing New Jersey farmers with assistance in alleviating wildlife damage to agricultural crops.
2005 Deer Fencing Highlights
One of the more significant Snyder Research and Extension Farm programs to assist farmers in reducing their economic losses from deer depredation is a cooperative cost share fencing program with the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. Under the program the New Jersey Department of Agriculture has provided over $600,000 in cost share funding to New Jersey farmers representing approximately 25% of fencing costs, the remainder paid by the farmer. The Snyder Research and Extension Farm has been actively involved in providing installation seminars so farmers can effectively install the fencing which requires significant technical skills. In addition, the Snyder Research and Extension Farm has distributed for the New Jersey Department of Agriculture over 500,000 feet of deer fencing and posts to New Jersey farmers.
Deer Fencing activities have included:
- evaluation of deer fencing
- developed specifications for New Jersey legislature to purchase 1.2 million feet (1998 - 800,000 ft. and 2005 - 400,00 ft.) of deer exclusion fence for New Jersey farmers
- in 2005, in cooperation with deer exclusion manufacturer Bekeart, conducted two deer fence construction workshops for farmers
