1,500 Farmers, Landscapers and Golf Course Superintendents Trained on Selection and Use of Backpack Sprayers

Highlights of report:

  • Over 740 farmers were trained in a three-year period.
  • A thorough evaluation of 19 models of backpack sprayers indicated major differences in performance. Experienced small-scale farmers evaluating sprayers in a hands-on crop production system found wide variations in performance and effort required to operate.
  • Training programs were offered to several different stakeholder groups including small-scale farmers, landscapers, turfgrass managers and golf course superintendents totaling over 1,500 trained participants.
  • Several other states including Pennsylvania, Delaware, Vermont, Michigan, Montana, and Iowa requested training programs.
  • A backpack sprayer conversion system, simple to install, was developed increasing accuracy and reducing potential for operator error.
