The Staff

John Grande
Director

grande@aesop.rutgers.edu

John has been Director at the Snyder Research and Extension Farm since the farm was bequeathed to the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1988. In addition to being responsible for the overall operation of the Center, John has additional educational programs in the area of turfgrass management. He currently has a cooperative program with the New Jersey Department of Transportation developing reduced maintenance programs for roadside right away turfgrass. The overall goal of the program is to reduce the frequency of mowing while maintaining aesthetically pleasing turfgrass. Cost savings derived from reduced mowing frequency can be calculated in millions of dollars across the thousands of miles of New Jersey road systems.

Recently hundreds of square miles of New Jersey municipalities have been zoned for residential building lots from 3 to 12 acres. A typical residential building lot in New Jersey in less then one quarter acre. Owners of these large single-family home sites are faced with increased financial and time requirements. John addresses these issues through educational field days for homeowners. Reduction in mowing frequency, as well as mowing equipment choices are included. He also teaches courses in pesticide application technology.

John is also actively engaged in Rutgers Cooperative Research & Extension athletic field turfgrass management programs providing resources to schools and municipalities.
