Lawn Insects and Their Control

Homeowners attending the lawn care clinic are given a review of the various insects of importance. Developing insect control strategies can be complex due to the variety of insects potentially impacting a lawn. Understanding how to identify the insect and the turfgrass damage symptoms can prove challenging to homeowners. Many insects are not routinely visible until the damage is done.

In Figure 18, Dr. Albrecht Koppenhofer discusses and demonstrates various species of grubs and their destructive nature to turfgrass. Some species of turfgrass are more resistant to insect damage than others. Often turfgrass damage occurs before homeowners are aware of the problem. Knowing what to look for and when to look for it is critical if insecticides are to be utilized.
